Since January 2004, the Swiss Federal Office of Public Health SFOPH is the supervising authority for the social health insurance (basic insurance) as well as licensing authority for the premiums and benefits of the
compulsory basic health insurance. The SFOPH took over the previous responsibilities in the health insurance area from the Federal Social Insurance Office (
FSIO).
