Hello, I have applied for a Swiss student visa on 22-1-2012 and my Masters course will be starting on 20-2-2012 at Bern University. The Migration Office in Bern requested me to provide them with a medical insurance and prove to them that I will be medically insured during my stay in Switzerland. How possible is it to get a medical insurance while I am in my home country, Jordan and before entering Switzerland? What is the first step to put a policy in place in order to get a medical insurance and get my visa application proceeded? Thank you in advance.

Hello, People who are resident in Switzerland due to education or further education, notably students or trainees, can be releaved from the compulsory basic insurance for at most 3 years if a request is submitted to the according cantonal authorities. Relief from compulsory insurance is only possible if the person has an equivalent insurance from their country of origin for the whole period of validity of the relief. A written confirmation with the required information from the responsible foreign authority has to be attached to the request. KVV, Art. 2 Para. 4 , best regards comparis.ch
