1. What is a debt collection extract?

A debt collection extract or statement provides information about the current or past debts of a natural or legal person. This information is recorded by a debt collection office in the debt collection register, at the place of residence or headquarters of the person or company. It should be noted that not every political municipality has its own debt collection office; often several municipalities join together to form a debt collection district.

2. Why and when do you need an extract from the debt collection register?

This is relevant in matters regarding the question of your (in)ability to pay. A debt collection statement must usually be submitted when a decision is to be made on the creditworthiness of the person or company in question. This is the case, for example, with:

  • Finding a place to live

  • Job searches

  • Loan applications

  • Larger orders on credit

  • Credit or debit card applications

When looking for an apartment, a landlord uses the debt collection extract to find out whether a person or company has been subject to debt collection in the past, and whether this is still pending or has already been completed. The landlord will also find out whether an enforcement action has been contested, and whether there have been seizures or loss certificates.

However, there is no legal obligation for the person or company to submit a debt collection certificate. This is because the landlord can request a debt collection certificate from the last place of residence if they have proof of the person’s interest in an apartment. Nevertheless, it’s a good idea to attach a debt collection extract to your rental application.

3. Where can I get a debt collection statement?

A debt collection extract can be ordered from the responsible debt collection office of the place of residence or directly from our partner.

For data security reasons, debt collection information is not provided by telephone. After all, it is not possible to confirm whether the person calling is authorized to receive such information. The debt collection extract must therefore be ordered either in person or with a written request.
