The insurer must provide benefits as stated in the insurance contract, should the insured event occur. Benefits may be linked to damage (damage coverage) or not (sum insurance). Benefits may be paid out in cash or may be compensation in kind (e.g. legal advice or representation provided by insurance companies themselves). In the case of life insurance, benefits contain the lump-sum or pension benefits as stated in the agreement in case of death, survival or inability to work. This includes outpayments for profit sharing as well as the surrender value of prematurely terminated contracts.
