01 October 2010 - Health insurance

On 1st October the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) published the official health insurance premiums for 2011. Premiums will incline on average by 8 percent. Young adults are particularly affected by the rise; their premiums grow at an above average level.

Insured persons are not completely at the mercy of the increase in premiums: Switching the insurance or the insurance model can lead to a reduction of the rise in premiums in many cases or can even completely eliminate them. Therefore, comparing health insurance premiums for 2011 is worthwhile.

Depending on the state of health, it is also worth adjusting the deductible rate: Those who think they will hardly cause any medical costs next year can substantially save premiums by choosing a higher deductible rate. By contrast, if you expect medical costs to be high in the coming year, you will benefit from a deductible rate of CHF 300, since with it, you will have to pay less out of your own pocket.
