On 11th June, the FIFA World Cup is starting in South Africa and will offer a huge spectacle for soccer fans – as well as a paradise for thieves. In order to be prepared against such events, World Cup visitors should include the supplement « simple theft outside the house » into their household insurance. Thereby, please be aware that this insurance supplement applies to luggage, cameras and other travel equipment, but not to cash and jewellery.

The situation changes if violence is involved. Travelers who are threatened with violence or even are victims of violence have a better standing when it comes to the insurance aspect of things. In such a case the «normal» household insurance applies.  It pays for the replacement value of the stolen goods and sometimes even replaces the stolen cash.

Also in the case of classical snatch robbery, the household insurance applies. Generally, it is recommended to get a police report in the case of theft, so that the insurance does not characterize the event as « simple theft ».

For reasons of precaution, travelers should make sure they are using suitable bags in which cash and valuables can be carried directly on the body. Further, you should never leave valuables out of sight, you should reduce the carried cash to a minimum and be careful in crowds.
