Collision Insurance

Buying collision insurance is optional (as opposed to third party insurance). Collision insurance provides coverage for damage to your own vehicle caused by yourself.
Some companies forgo shortening coverage in cases of gross negligence if they include this in their policy, others sell this kind of protection separately.

Comprehensive insurance: Certain insurance providers use this term for combined partial coverage and collision insurance.

Tip:
If your vehicle is leased, collision insurance is mandatory.
Otherwise, there is no rule of thumb as to who needs such insurance and who does not.
The newer the vehicle, the greater the likelihood that its owner will buy collision insurance. You can find useful information about benefits in the case of total loss here.
