Bonus Evaluation of Car Insurance Products

Bonus systems have a large influence on premiums. This is why we evaluated each insurer's bonus system as follows:

Evaluation criteria:

  1. How long does it take customers to reach the lowest premium level?
  2. How much more do premiums cost after damage in spite of having been accident-free for years?
  3. How far apart are premium levels over 100%?
  4. How much more do premiums cost on average after an accident?
  5. Is insurance for all damage subject to the bonus system or just premiums for collision coverage?

This evaluation criteria was analyzed for 8 different typical driver profiles:

  1. Profile # 1: 5 accident-free years (+/- 2 years)

  2. Profile # 2: 5 years (+/- 2 years) with 1-2 accidents

  3. Profile # 3: New drivers (with up to two years' experience) with no damage

  4. Profile # 4: Long-term accident-free drivers

  5. Profile # 5: Long-term accident-free drivers with 1-2 cases of damage within the past 5 years

  6. Profile # 6: New drivers with 1-2 cases of damage within the past two years

  7. Profile # 7: Older drivers with decades of experience, with 2-3 cases of damage within the last 4 years

  8. Profile # 8: Chronic crash drivers with 3 or more cases of damage within the past 5 years
